Key Takeaways

  • Claude doesn't generate images natively. A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, added as a custom connector, gives it that ability.

  • Mage MCP is our top pick: one OAuth sign-in, 28 image, video and audio models, and your Mage Characters and References available inside Claude.

  • All 5 servers on this list are remote, so they work in claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code without installing anything locally.

  • Free Claude accounts can add 1 custom connector. Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans have no such limit.

Can Claude Generate Images?

Not by itself. Anthropic's own help center confirms Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image generation tools do. It can write SVG, build charts and read the images you upload, but a picture of a lighthouse in a storm needs something else.

That something is an MCP server. Anthropic released the Model Context Protocol as an open standard in November 2024, and it lets Claude call outside tools. Plug in an image generation server and Claude can write the prompt, pick the model, run the job and hand the result back in the chat. We ranked the 5 servers below on how they connect, which models they reach, what a generation costs and how much they do beyond a single image.

What Sets a Good Image Generation MCP Apart

Plenty of image MCPs on GitHub are thin wrappers around one model's API. The ones worth adding to your daily setup share a few traits.

How it connects

A remote server with OAuth sign-in is the easiest kind to live with. You paste a URL into Claude's connector settings, sign in once, and you're done. Local servers that need Node.js and a pasted API key work too, but they can't run in claude.ai on the web, and they break when the key rotates.

Which models sit behind it

A server tied to one vendor gives you one look. A server with a catalog lets Claude switch between a photoreal model, a typography model and a video model inside the same conversation.

How you pay for a generation

Some servers bill per run against API credits, others draw from a subscription you already have. A built-in cost estimate tool is a big plus, because Claude will happily queue 10 variations if you let it.

Where it works

Claude now runs on the web, on desktop, on mobile and in the terminal as Claude Code. The best servers work across all of them with the same sign-in.

What it does past the first image

Editing an image, pulling up your history and reusing a saved character matter more over a month of use than the model count. Read the tool list as closely as the model list.

1. Mage MCP - by Mage

Mage MCP puts the whole Mage studio inside Claude. It's a remote server at mcp.mage.space/mcp with OAuth sign-in, and Mage's setup guides cover Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Cowork, plus Claude Code.

What it does well:

  • 28 image, video and audio models behind one connection, with Mango 3 as the default image model and Cherry 2 Pro as the default video model

  • 16 tools, including generate, estimate_cost, list_history and search_creations

  • Your saved Characters and References work in Claude, so a prompt like "a portrait of @ana wearing @red-coat" keeps the same face and outfit

  • An estimate_cost tool that quotes a generation's price before Claude runs it

  • One-click setup: the "Add Mage to Claude" button pre-fills Claude's connector page

The Characters support is the part no other server on this list matches. Build a character once on Mage and Claude can drop them into images, then animate the result into a vertical video, without you re-describing anyone. Ask Claude to "Show my last ten generations and make a variation of the second one" and it pulls from your actual Mage history.

The catch: generations through the MCP are paid in Gems from your Mage account at each model's listed price.

Best for: creators who want consistent characters across images and video without leaving Claude.

2. fal MCP - by fal

fal's official server opens its entire model catalog to Claude. It runs remotely with OAuth, so there's no API key to paste, and it covers image, video, audio, speech and 3D.

What it does well:

  • The widest model range on this list

  • A recommend_model tool that suggests a model for the job

  • A get_pricing tool, so Claude can check a model's price before running it

  • Async job tools (submit, check, fetch) that suit long video renders

  • Works in claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code

The connector itself is free. You pay for each run at fal's standard rates from your fal credits, which makes it easy to try a new release the week it lands.

The catch: it's a raw catalog. There are no saved characters or galleries, and with hundreds of models you'll spend time deciding which one to call.

Best for: developers who want to test any model from one place.

3. FLUX MCP - by Black Forest Labs

Black Forest Labs, the team behind FLUX, runs its own remote MCP server. Sign in with OAuth, pick which organization to bill, and Claude can generate, edit and vary images with the FLUX.2 family, or make video with FLUX 3.

What it does well:

  • First-party access to FLUX models, with no middleman

  • Generates up to 8 images in a single call

  • Edits an image you attach to the chat

  • Keeps a browsable history of past generations

  • FLUX 3 video with audio, from 5 to 20 seconds

If FLUX is already your model of choice, this is the cleanest way to reach it from Claude. Billing runs at Black Forest Labs' API rates.

The catch: it's Black Forest Labs' models and nothing else. When a prompt calls for a different look, you need a second connector.

Best for: FLUX users who want the newest models the day they ship.

4. Recraft MCP - by Recraft

Recraft's server is the design pick. It's remote, signs in with OAuth through an "Add Recraft to Claude" link, and outputs both raster images and editable vectors.

What it does well:

  • Scalable vector graphics (SVG) output, which no other server here offers

  • Vectorize, upscale and background removal tools

  • Area editing and erasing on existing images

  • Custom styles for keeping a brand look consistent

  • Draws on Recraft plan credits, so there's no separate API bill

Ask Claude for a set of icons and Recraft can hand back SVG files you can open in a design tool and edit. For logos and brand assets, that skips a redraw.

The catch: no video, and the style range leans toward graphic design rather than photoreal or painterly work.

Best for: logos, icons and brand graphics.

5. Hugging Face MCP Server - by Hugging Face

Hugging Face's official server connects Claude to the Hub, including Spaces that run open image models such as FLUX.1 Krea and Qwen-Image. It's the low-cost entry point on this list.

What it does well:

  • Free to start with a Hugging Face account

  • Access to open models you can also run yourself

  • Qwen-Image for readable text inside images

  • Thousands of community Spaces to add as tools

  • Doubles as a search tool for models, datasets and papers

Image generation runs on ZeroGPU, which comes with a daily GPU quota. Free accounts get 5 minutes of GPU time a day and PRO accounts get 40. Paid accounts can keep going past the quota at $1 per 10 minutes.

The catch: setup happens in 2 places (Claude's connector settings, then the Spaces you pick on Hugging Face), and busy Spaces can queue.

Best for: trying open models for free before you commit to a paid server.

Connecting Mage to Claude

Setup takes about a minute, and you'll need a Mage account. The full walkthrough lives on our Mage in Claude guide.

Step 1: Select "Add Mage to Claude" on the guide page. It opens Claude's Connectors page with the server URL already filled in. Select Add.

Step 2: Select Connect, sign in to Mage and approve access.

Step 3: In any chat, open the + menu and turn on Mage under Connectors.

Step 4: Ask for something specific. Name the model if you have one in mind. Here's a prompt from Mage's own documentation:

Make a cinematic poster of a lighthouse in a storm with Mango 3.

Step 5: Keep going in the same thread. Ask Claude to turn the poster into a 5-second vertical video, and it hands the image to a video model for you.

In Claude Code, one command does it: claude mcp add --transport http mage https://mcp.mage.space/mcp. Then run /mcp to sign in.

Image Generation in Claude: Common Questions

Do I need an API key to generate images in Claude?

Not for any server on this list. All 5 sign in through OAuth or your account login. Mage also offers an optional API key for headless and CI setups.

Is there a free way to generate images in Claude?

Hugging Face's server is free up to its daily GPU quota. Every other option bills per generation or draws on a paid plan. Free Claude accounts are limited to 1 custom connector, so pick carefully.

What's the difference between a Claude connector and an MCP server?

A connector is how Claude's apps attach to an MCP server. The server does the work, and the connector is the saved link, sign-in included, that lets Claude call it.

Do image generation connectors work in Claude Code?

Yes. Remote servers add with one claude mcp add command, then authenticate with /mcp. All 5 servers on this list document a Claude Code setup.

Can Claude make SVG files with an MCP?

Claude can write simple SVG code on its own. For designed vector artwork, Recraft's server returns editable SVG files.

Where do I add a custom connector in Claude?

On the web and desktop, open Customize, then Connectors, select + Add, then Add custom connector, give it a name and paste the server URL. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it under Organization settings first.
