Key Takeaways

  • The Mage API is our top pick for character work: one key reaches 15 image models, including Mango 3 (a Mage exclusive), plus video and audio on the same billing.

  • OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5, Google's Nano Banana 2.1 and Black Forest Labs' FLUX are the 3 big first-party APIs, and all 3 shipped new models in the last 3 months.

  • Most APIs bill by quality tier, resolution or megapixel, so compare costs at the setting you'll actually ship.

  • Google's Imagen is shut down in the Gemini API, and Midjourney still has no public API. Neither belongs on a 2026 shortlist.

  • For text inside images, Ideogram and Nano Banana are the specialists. Recraft is the only one here that outputs editable vector (SVG) files.

What Is the Best Image Generation API?

The best image generation application programming interface (API) depends on what you're building. For an app that keeps the same character across many images, the Mage API wins because saved Characters carry over between calls. For raw text-to-image at volume, Nano Banana 2.1 and FLUX.2 cost less per image.

The models changed fast this fall: GPT Image 2.5 arrived in September, Nano Banana 2.1 went generally available on October 6, and FLUX 3 Image is rolling out. Below, we compare 7 APIs on current models, resolution, reference images, billing model and how each one returns results.

What Sets a Good Image Generation API Apart

Benchmarks rank pictures. A production API also has to fit your code, your budget and your content.

How it bills

Most APIs bill by quality tier, resolution or megapixel. The low tier is what the pricing page leads with, and the tier you'll ship often costs several times more, so check the setting you'll actually use.

Resolution and aspect ratios

1K is fine for web thumbnails. Print, covers and hero images need 2K or 4K, and some APIs won't reach those sizes outside their premium models.

Reference images and consistency

If your product shows the same person, product or style more than once, you need reference images. The number accepted ranges from 1 to 14, and only some APIs let you save a reference and call it by name later.

Sync or async

Synchronous APIs hold the connection until the image is ready, which is simple but ties up a request for up to a couple of minutes. Async APIs return a job ID you poll (or a webhook), which scales better in queues.

Content rules and ownership

Every API filters content, but some let you adjust the threshold and some don't. Check who owns the output too: most assign it to you, with exceptions on free tiers.

1. Mango 3 - by Mage

The Mage API gives you one key for Mage's whole catalog: 15 image models, 12 video model families and audio. Mango 3, Mage's flagship image model and a Mage exclusive, is the default for images, and it's built for consistent characters, merging images and precise edits.

What it does well:

  • 15 image models behind one endpoint pattern, including Mango 3, Mango 3 Turbo, Guava 2, Flux 2, GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana 2.1

  • Saved Characters and References you call by @handle, so the same face carries across requests

  • Up to 10 reference images per Mango request

  • TypeScript and Python software development kits (SDKs), plus a ComfyUI node pack

  • Idempotency keys, so a retried request never bills twice

Mango 3 renders at 1K and 2K in 9 aspect ratios, from 21:9 to 9:21. When a job needs more pixels, Mango 2 runs on the same key at up to 4K. Requests return a job ID right away, and you've got 30 days to download the results.

The catch: API calls are paid in Gems, separate from a Mage membership's unlimited generation.

Best for: apps and agents that need the same character across many images, or image, video and audio on one bill.

2. GPT Image 2.5 - by OpenAI

OpenAI shipped GPT Image 2.5 in 2 versions in September 2026: Flare for fast everyday generation and Sunburst, which OpenAI calls its most capable model for generation and editing. GPT Image 2 hasn't gone anywhere, and it still has published per-image rates.

What it does well:

  • Generation and editing in one API, including multi-image edits and inpainting

  • Custom sizes up to a 3840px edge (above 2560x1440 is marked experimental)

  • Transparent backgrounds on 2.5 with PNG or WebP output

  • Streaming partial images while the final renders

  • Batch API at 50% off

GPT Image 2 is billed per image at low, medium or high quality. GPT Image 2.5 is billed by tokens, so its per-image cost depends on size and quality.

The catch: OpenAI may ask you to complete Organization Verification before you can call GPT Image models, and OpenAI's own docs still list text placement and recurring-character consistency as limitations.

Best for: product teams that want strong editing and already build on OpenAI.

3. Nano Banana 2.1 - by Google

Nano Banana 2.1 went generally available in the Gemini API on October 6, 2026, as Google's main image workhorse. If you're making complex, text-heavy images, Nano Banana Pro sits above it.

What it does well:

  • 1K, 2K and 4K output, billed per image by resolution

  • Up to 14 reference images

  • Legible text for menus, infographics and diagrams

  • Wide aspect ratios, including 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1

  • Image search grounding for real-world references

Batch requests cost 50% less, with up to 24-hour turnaround, for jobs that can wait.

The catch: every image carries Google's SynthID watermark, thinking tokens are billed and can't be turned off, and Google's older Nano Banana 2 model was deprecated the same day 2.1 launched.

Best for: high-volume apps that need 4K output and good text.

4. FLUX.2 - by Black Forest Labs

Black Forest Labs sells FLUX.2 in [max], [pro], [flex] and [klein] versions, priced per megapixel, and FLUX 3 Image is rolling out through early access. BFL says FLUX.2 remains fully supported for production, so you don't need to migrate yet.

What it does well:

  • Per-megapixel billing on FLUX.2

  • Up to 8 reference images on FLUX.2 (10 on FLUX 3 Image)

  • FLUX 3 Image up to 4K, plus a lighter FLUX 3 Image Klein

  • A safety_tolerance setting from 0 (strictest) to 5 on FLUX.2, default 2

  • Open-weights [klein] 4B under Apache 2.0 for self-hosting

That 6-step safety dial (0 to 4 on FLUX 3) is finer than OpenAI's two-level moderation setting.

The catch: everything is async, so you'll write a polling loop or webhook handler.

Best for: developers who want per-megapixel pricing and an open-weights fallback.

5. Ideogram 4.5 - by Ideogram

Ideogram 4.5, released this fall, adds precise editing, and Ideogram describes its recent models as built for crisp typography. If your images carry words, that's where to start.

What it does well:

  • Text that renders the exact words you quote

  • 4.5 Generate at 3 quality tiers, at 1K or 2K

  • Up to 5 source images per request

  • A dry_run option that returns the price before you generate

  • Sync by default, with async and signed webhooks available

Ideogram's API also resells partner models, including GPT Image and Nano Banana, so one Ideogram key can cover several engines.

The catch: the default rate limit is 10 requests in flight, and output tops out at about 4 megapixels (2K presets such as 2048x2048) unless you upscale.

Best for: posters, social graphics, packaging mockups and anything with text in the frame.

6. Recraft V4.1 - by Recraft

Recraft V4.1 is the default Recraft model, and it's the only API here that returns real vector files: editable SVG, not a traced raster.

What it does well:

  • SVG vector output alongside raster

  • V4.1 Flash for fast raster drafts

  • Up to 10 style reference images

  • An OpenAI-compatible SDK

  • 100 images a minute per user

Image links expire after about 24 hours, so save results as soon as they come back.

The catch: images made on Recraft's free plan belong to Recraft and can't be used commercially. Paid plans give you full ownership.

Best for: logos, icons and brand graphics that need to scale.

7. Stable Image Ultra - by Stability AI

Stability AI's top hosted model is Stable Image Ultra, built on Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large. It returns a 1-megapixel image directly, with 17 style presets and negative prompts.

What it does well:

  • Simple synchronous calls: request in, image out

  • Negative prompts and style presets

  • Failed results aren't charged

  • 25 free credits to start

  • Lighter tiers down to SD 3.5 Flash

The catch: Stability hasn't released a new flagship image model since late 2024, output stops at 1 megapixel, and its filters aren't adjustable.

Best for: teams already running Stable Diffusion locally who want a hosted fallback.

Calling Mango 3 Through the Mage API

The Mage API is async: you submit a job, get an ID back and check on it.

Step 1: Create an API key on Mage's developers page. Keys start with mage_sk_ and are shown once.

Step 2: Add Gems. API calls bill against your Gem balance at each model's listed price.

Step 3: Send a POST request to the Mango generate endpoint with the mango-v3 model and your prompt. This one comes from Mage's own Mango model page:

Editorial portrait in soft daylight, 35mm film look

Step 4: The API returns a 202 with a request ID. Poll the status link until the job is completed, then download the result.

Step 5: To keep a face consistent, save a Character once and put its @handle in later prompts. Add an Idempotency-Key header to every request so retries never double-bill.

The Mage model pages list every model's ID, options and starting price.

Pick the Right API for the Job

The same character across many images fits the Mage API, where a saved Character carries over between calls and the same key also runs video and audio.

For text in the frame (posters, packaging, social graphics), start with Ideogram 4.5 or Nano Banana 2.1. Logos and icons that need to scale belong on Recraft, the only API here that returns SVG.

Teams already on OpenAI that need heavy editing and inpainting should use GPT Image 2.5.

High-volume 4K output suits Nano Banana 2.1, especially through its batch mode.

FLUX.2 gives you a self-hosting fallback through the open-weights [klein] 4B, and Stable Image Ultra is the simple synchronous call with negative prompts.

Image Generation API Questions, Answered

Does Midjourney have an API?

No. Midjourney's terms of service ban automated access, and its only official route is an Enterprise API interest survey with no timeline. Third-party "Midjourney APIs" automate user accounts and risk bans.

Is Google Imagen still available?

Not in the Gemini API, where Google lists it as shut down. Imagen 4 on Vertex AI showed a June 30, 2026 discontinuation date. Nano Banana 2.1 is Google's current image API.

Which image generation API is best for consistent characters?

The Mage API, because a saved Character can be called by @handle in any later request. Nano Banana 2.1 takes up to 14 reference images per request, and OpenAI's own docs list recurring-character consistency as a GPT Image limitation.

Which API is best for text inside images?

Ideogram and Nano Banana are both built to render legible text. OpenAI's own documentation still lists precise text placement as a GPT Image limitation.

Can I use API-generated images commercially?

Generally yes. OpenAI, Google, Black Forest Labs and Stability AI all let you use outputs, and Recraft gives full ownership on paid plans only.

Your First Mango 3 Call

There's no subscription for the API. Buy Gems, send the example prompt above, and each request draws down the model's listed rate. Purchased Gems last 90 days, and failed generations are refunded.
